What’s behind the Iranian protest chant of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’? – BBC Newsnight

On September 16, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of Iranian morality police for allegedly breaking strict hijab rules. What followed were protests that’ve become the biggest threat to the country’s theocracy in more than a decade. 
 
The Iran Human Rights’ group latest estimate suggests 201 people have been killed in the protests, including 23 children. 
 
Many videos show people chanting the slogan of the rebellion, “Woman, Life, Freedom.” BBC Persian service’s Jiyar Gol explores the origins of that cry.
