Pakistan’s statistics bureau announced on August 1, 2022, that the country’s annual consumer price inflation reached 24.9 per cent in July, the highest in 14 years. What does that mean for one of the country’s most popular fried snacks? In 2021, the relatively cheap and tasty puri snack cost around 20 Pakistani rupees (US$0.09) each. But the price has doubled within a year due to the rising production cost, including wheat flour, electricity and cooking oil.
