Mountain villages in Pakistan are increasingly under threat from unstable lakes formed by melting glacier ice. Himalayan glaciers are on track to lose up to 75 per cent of their ice by the century’s end due to global warming, according to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. Of an estimated 15 million people at risk of glacial lake flooding worldwide, about 2 million are in Pakistan, according to a February 2023 study published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
