China ordered a lockdown of the city of Yuzhou in the central province of Henan on January 3, 2022, after the discovery of just three coronavirus cases on January 2-3. Yuzhou’s 1.1 million residents were ordered to remain indoors and public transport was suspended. As of January 4, over 950,000 people had been tested for Covid-19. Yuzhou’s lockdown followed a similar operation in Xian in northwestern Shaanxi province, where about 13 million people have been confined to their homes since December 23, 2021. China is holding on to its zero-Covid strategy ahead of the Lunar New Year starting February 1 and the Beijing Winter Olympics which open February 4.
