A strong earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan on the evening of January 3, 2022, according to the island’s Central Weather Bureau. Shaking was reported in the capital Taipei, but there were no immediate reports of damage. Bureau officials said the quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and was recorded at a relatively shallow depth of 19km (12 miles). The United States Geological Survey said it measured the tremor at magnitude 6.2 and a depth of 28km (17 miles).
