China has banned BBC World News from broadcasting inside the country, according to the National Radio and Television Administration. In a statement released at midnight on February 12, 2021, the regulator said the channel’s reporting on China “seriously violated” Chinese media regulations. The move came after the BBC published a report in early February detailing allegations of torture and sexual violence against Uygurs in Xinjiang camps. Last week, China threatened to retaliate after the British media regulator revoked the broadcast licence of Chinese state-owned, English-language broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN).
