Can Ukraine's artistic treasures be saved from war? – BBC News

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, efforts to protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage are stepped up.

A local museum and its art works in Ivankiv, north-west of Kyiv, has been burned down by Russian forces, according to reports.

The country is home to seven Unesco heritage sites, including the St Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv with its golden domes and stunning Byzantine fresco of the Virgin Mary.

Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta, who is the museum director of Mystetskyi Arsenal, one of Europe’s largest art museums, said she had decided to stay in Kyiv, protecting the artwork.

“We are facing basically not just an attack on Ukraine but we are also facing an attack on our culture,” she said.

The BBC’s Katie Razzall reports.
