British embassy worker David Smith has been sentenced to 13 years and two months after he pleaded guilty to eight offences under the Official Secrets Act for passing secret information to Russia. 

His crimes have attracted strong condemnation from the National Crime Agency, MI5 and the British embassy at which Smith worked in Berlin. 

Smith was caught following an undercover sting operation in which fake Russian agents offered him the chance to obtain “highly sensitive information”.
