The US has singled out North Korea for violating the global nuclear non-proliferation treaty amid reports of an impending nuclear test by Pyongyang. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was speaking at a UN conference to review the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) on August 1, 2022. North Korea has reportedly test-fired more missiles in 2022 than in any previous year. It had conducted six nuclear tests until 2017 and a seventh test is now reportedly in the works. Russia and the US account for 90 per cent of the world’s nuclear warheads. The NPT, which focuses on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy, has 191 signatories including China, France, Russia, UK and US. India, Israel and Pakistan have opted out of the 1970 treaty, while North Korea withdrew in 2003. At the UN conference, Japan appealed for a de-escalation of tensions in the region.
