YouTube Suspends OANN, Purdue Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges, and the State of the US Economy

YouTube and parent owner Alphabet have been criticized in the past for taking a more hands-off approach at pandemic misinformation but yesterday the video sharing platform finally took a stand on the issue by suspending One America’s YouTube channel for promoting a false COVID-19 cure. The network has gained prominence recently as President Trump has urged his supporters to get their information from alternative news outlets such as OANN as opposed to traditional conservative channel Fox News.

Purdue Pharma has formally admitted its role in the opioid epidemic, pleading guilty to three federal criminal charges via a virtual hearing with a federal judge today. The charges include conspiring to defraud US officials and paying illegal kickbacks to healthcare professionals in order to encourage the writing of prescriptions for the drug OxyContin.

The Department of Commerce released its findings today on the state of the US Economy. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis US Consumer spending grew 0.5% for the month of October, continuing a sixth month trend that has nearly brought spending back to pre-pandemic levels.
