One year after his death on February 6, 2021, a group of residents in Wuhan laid flowers and paid tribute to Li Wenliang, a doctor who first raised the alarm about the coronavirus outbreak in the city. The gathering took place outside the hospital where the virus was first reported. Li, an ophthalmologist, was one of eight doctors who first publicly warned about the outbreak in December 2019. But Chinese police told him to “stop making false comments” and accused him of “spreading rumours”. The doctor later contracted the virus and died at the age of 33 in February 2020.
