Thousands of migrants were trapped in freezing weather at camps set up along the Belarus border with Poland as of November 10, 2021. Both countries have deployed troops, raising fears of an armed escalation. Western critics have accused Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko of sending migrants across the border in retaliation against European Union sanctions.
