Victims of what could be one of China’s worst financial scandals were surrounded by local police and beaten by a group of unidentified men during a protest on July 10, 2022, in central Henan province. About 1,000 demonstrators protested outside a branch of the People’s Bank of China in the city of Zhengzhou, seeking to recover millions of yuan frozen in four rural banks.
