Taliban fighters help NGO clear landmines in Afghanistan

The British non-government organisation HALO Trust has since September 2021 been helping a village in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province identify areas where landmines have been buried. For years, the Nad Ali village on the front lines of the conflict between the US-led occupation forces and the Taliban, who planted numerous landmines in the area. But with the Taliban in control of the country since the fall of the capital Kabul in August, the group’s fighters are back – this time helping the NGO identify the deadly devices. Landmines and unexploded ordnance have been blamed for over 41,000 civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan since 1989.
