On November 20, 2023, Taiwanese Vice-President Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party named Hsiao Bi-khim, the island’s de facto ambassador to the US, as his running mate in the upcoming January presidential election. Hsiao has been Taipei’s de facto ambassador to the United States since 2020, and is widely regarded in Washington as a well-connected and savvy diplomat. But she has also been vilified and twice sanctioned by Beijing who sees her as a ‘separatist’.
