The Sri Lankan government announced nationwide 13-hour daily power cuts starting on March 31, 2022. This comes as the country reels under its worst economic outlook since gaining independence in 1948, with rolling blackouts, soaring food prices and fuel shortages the norm. The crisis has left many fishermen moored at harbour, short of fuel and unable to reel in the day’s catch. In the capital Colombo, long lines formed as Sri Lankans queued hours for fuel. Some took to the streets and blamed their plight on government mismanagement.
