Scientists have broken the world records for the deepest fish ever caught, as well as catching such a feat on camera. As part of a joint Japanese-Australian expedition to study the deepest fish populations in the world, snailfish were filmed in August 2022 at a depth of 8,336 metres (27,349ft) in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench off the coast of Japan, beating the previous record in the Mariana Trench by 158 metres (518ft). Snailfish were also caught at a similar depth, the first time fish have been caught more than five miles (8km) below the ocean surface.
