Chinese and Russian jet bombers carried out joint flights near Japan on May 24, 2022, during meetings in Tokyo involving US President Joe Biden and the leaders of three major Asia-Pacific countries including Australia, India and Japan. Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said his government expressed “grave concerns” to Russia and China over the flights which took place while the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) alliance leaders held talks on regional security. Although the planes did not breach territorial airspace, it was the fourth time since November 2021 that long-distance joint flights by Russia and China were spotted near Japan. Tokyo has volatile ties and border disputes with its neighbours China, Russia and South Korea, and routinely sends jets to defend Japanese airspace.
