The Philippine Coast Guard has accused its Chinese counterpart of “close-distance manoeuvring” near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, which Beijing calls Huangyan Island and Manila refers to as Panatag Shoal. The March 2, 2022, incident saw a Chinese coastguard vessel “constrain” the manoeuvring space of the Philippine ship BRP Malabrigo, according to the country’s coastguard. Its commandant, Admiral Artemio Abu, said this was the fourth such incident involving vessels from both countries in the contested shoal since May 2021. Claimed by both countries, the shoal falls within China’s “nine-dash line” in the South China Sea. The incident comes as the archipelago nation begins its largest-ever joint military drill with the United States.
