Myanmar is the world’s biggest source of jade, exporting more than US$420 million worth of the gemstone mineral between October 2019 to May 2020. The nation’s jade industry has long supported the financing of the military, which seized power on February 1, 2021, after staging a coup and detaining pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The junta has since warned jade shops that if they failed to reopen by November 5, 2021, they could be “temporarily seized”. Meanwhile, anti-coup dissidents have targeted junta-controlled trading activities, including at the Mandalay market which was closed for months because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Dissident group Generation Z has reportedly staged two attacks since the market reopened on October 12, with the second blast on November 4 killing a police officer.
