Port Moresby’s General Hospital began mass burials on December 8, 2021, with the Covid-19 pandemic helping cram the morgue with hundreds of bodies. The facility, built for just 60 deceased, now houses 300. The bodies have been left unclaimed for months. That’s a rarity in Papua New Guinea where funeral ceremonies typically draw large crowds and last for days. PNG continues to struggle with the pandemic. Testing is patchy and widespread fears over the vaccine have left health authorities struggling to find a solution. Only 2.25 per cent of the population are vaccinated, as of December 9, 2021.
