Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to facilitate peace talks in restive southern Thailand. He made the comments during an official visit to Bangkok on February 9, 2023, to meet his Thai counterpart Prayuth Chan-ocha. Thailand’s southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and parts of Songkhla, which border Malaysia, are an important crossroads for Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. But the area has been gripped by an insurgency against Thai rule by fighters from the Muslim-Malay majority since 2004.
