Traditional buffalo races in Jembrana, in the western part of the Indonesian resort island of Bali, date back more than 100 years. The annual competition sees farmers race their prized animals pulling wooden chariots in a series of exciting and often nail-biting contests, which can be as dangerous as they are entertaining. Buffalo jockeys take the races seriously, dressing their steeds in traditional costumes and offering prayers for victory. Wayan Riyasa is one of the jockeys who is keeping makepung alive by racing himself and who has high hopes that one day he will be succeeded by his son.
