Japan’s new whaling mother ship arrived in Tokyo on May 23, 2024, ahead of its maiden hunting expedition off the nation’s northeast coast. The Kangei Maru will process and store whales caught by a fleet of smaller vessels. Japan’s first domestically produced mother ship in over 70 years has faced a wave of criticism. Animal rights activists say that since whales live for a long time and reproduce slowly, they are not sustainable as a food source.
