Italy's Lampedusa appeals for assistance after thousands of refugee arrivals

The Italian island of Lampedusa says it cannot cope with the number of refugees and migrants arriving on its shores.
Around 7,000 people arrived there in 48 hours.
Authorities have begun transferring some asylum seekers to ease the situation.
