Temperatures in some parts of Iraq have soared to 50°C (122°F) in the first week of June 2022. People have resorted to various means of cooling off under the extreme temperatures, including by taking a dip in Baghdad’s Tigris River or by setting up misting fans on streets and buying bottled water in bulk. Parts of Iraq are already suffering from drought, especially in the country’s marshes. The NGO Nature Iraq said the water levels in the marshes in 2022 have been lower compared to the same time last year. Water buffalo herders say they are struggling to keep their livestock alive.
