India’s Supreme Court has declined to legalise same-sex marriage in the country. The decision, which was handed down on October 17, 2023, recognised the right of LGBTQ couples to choose their partners, but declined to do so for same-sex unions, saying that it was a decision for India’s parliament. It was the country’s biggest court decision since the landmark ruling legalising homosexuality in 2018.
