A raid conducted by Indian security forces against a group of Maoist rebels in the central Indian province of Chhattisgarh has resulted in the death of dozens of rebels on April 16, 2024. The Maoists, who follow the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong’s communist ideology, have waged a guerilla war in the region for decades, which they call a ‘people’s war’ against major mining corporations that exploit local minerals. The clash happened days before the start of elections in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third straight term. His party has vowed to completely extinguish the rebellion within three years, if reelected.
