The grandson of South Korean military dictator Chun Doo-hwan has apologised to victims of a massacre that happened when the former leader ordered troops to put down the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. Chun Woo-won visited the May 18th National Cemetery on March 31, 2023, and used his own coat to clean gravestones of some of the victims. More than 200 people were killed in the massacre. The 27-year-old grandson is the first member of the Chun family to express remorse about the incident.
