Three years since Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalise same-sex unions, some members in the island’s gay community are still unable to wed their partners. Under current rules, Taiwan only recognises gay marriages to foreign partners from the roughly 30 countries and regions where same-sex marriage is also legal. Activists say the rule discriminates against gay couples involving foreign partners, keeping them apart especially during the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen many unable to enter Taiwan as dependents or spouses.
