Taiwanese artists have turned the island of Matsu into a historical art gallery. The former bunker island, which lies closer to mainland China than it does to Taiwan, served as a key military outpost when the Kuomintang or Nationalist government fled to Taiwan. These military sites have been transformed into tourist attractions that remind residents of the past while serving as inspiration for a new generation of artists.
