Electric carmaker Tesla has come under fire in the United States for opening a new showroom in China’s far western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The new showroom opened on January 1, 2022, in the capital Urumqi. China has long been accused of imposing forced assimilation policies on its Uygur ethnic minority in Xinjiang, prompting US President Joe Biden to ban imports from the region on December 23, 2021. Beijing has repeatedly denied the human rights abuse allegations and has been pressuring companies to adopt its positions in their advertising and on websites.
