Fighting in the eastern Myanmar state of Kayah, also known as Karenni state, has reached a scale unseen in decades, according to a humanitarian relief organisation. David Eubank, director of the Free Burma Rangers, described the situation as some of the worst fighting in the country since the Second World War. He noted there were frequent attacks from military fighter jets, helicopters and mortars. In a February 24, 2022 report by a state-run newspaper, the Myanmar military admitted to using air strikes and heavy artillery to clear out what it described as “terrorist groups” near the Kayah state capital.
