Rival factions battled across the Libyan capital Tripoli on August 27, 2022. The clashes were the worst fighting seen in two years, leaving 23 people dead, including 17 civilians, and 87 people injured. The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) under Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah is fighting a rival administration under Fathi Bashagha, who is backed by the eastern-based parliament. After two years of relative peace, the months-long political stand-off between the two parties threatens to escalate into a wider conflict.
