Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong, in Beijing on December 21, 2022, the 50th anniversary of the two countries establishing diplomatic ties.. Wong is the first Australian minister to visit China since 2019. Relations between the two have been frosty since 2020 when Canberra pushed for an international inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus. Beijing responded by sanctioning and raising tariffs on an array of Australian exports.
