Wild elephants have been wandering again in China’s southwestern province of Yunnan, a year after a group of the animals from a nature reserve in the area captured global attention as they were spotted far from home on an apparent search of food. This time a herd of 30 Asian elephants were enjoying a meal on a hillside slope near the Laotian border in Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture. Local villagers reported the sighting to police on about July 11, 2022, and after two days foraging in the area, the animals made their way back safely to the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, where 90 per cent of China’s wild elephants live.
