China’s birth rate drops to record low

New figures from China show the population is in decline for the first time in more than sixty years.
The national birth rate hit a record low – 6.77 births per 1,000 people.
If these trends continue, a shrinking number of workers will have to support a growing number of retirees.
Labour shortages and a smaller tax base could majorly impact the economy.
Economists say strict Covid-19 rules are partly to blame.
They expect a low birth rate and a rapidly ageing population to have far-reaching effects.
The latest data comes as government implores people to have more children after decades of doing the opposite.

Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu reports from Xianghe county in northern China.
