The biggest band in K-pop, BTS, might be allowed to continue performing in shows including concerts overseas even as members enter mandatory military service, South Korea’s defence minister said on August 1, 2022. Under South Korean law, all men must spend at least 18 months in the military between the ages of 18 and 28. The age rules have been relaxed for internationally famous K-pop acts including BTS, with the cut-off age pushed to 30 for performers. But as Jin, the oldest of the seven members of BTS, is about to turn 30 in December 2020, South Korean lawmakers are discussing a proposal to reduce the length of service required from nearly two years to just three weeks.
