US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang in Beijing on June 18, 2023, in a bid to ease tensions between the two countries. Blinken’s visit to the Chinese capital, the first by a US secretary of state in five years, had initially been planned for February but was cancelled after Washington said it detected and later shot down a Chinese spy balloon. Both sides called the Beijing talks “constructive” and agreed to continue discussions in Washington.
