The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, home to 18 million, has introduced China’s clearest framework yet for autonomous vehicle (AV) regulations. From August 1, 2022, registered AVs will be allowed to operate without a driver in the driving seat across a broad swathe of the city, but a driver must still be present in the vehicle. Developed by start-up DeepRoute.ai, Robotaxi has given out 50,000 trial rides to passengers in the last year in Shenzhen’s dense central business district of Futian. DeepRoute CEO Maxwell Zhou welcomed the move, saying it would help collect data and develop driving algorithms. But Zhou said that having more vehicles on the road could potentially lead to more accidents, adding the new regulations would be important in achieving mass deployment eventually.
