The Australian state of Victoria will not hold a state funeral for Cardinal George Pell, who died at the age of 81. The decision was confirmed by the state’s premier, who said that an official memorial for the late cardinal, who was convicted of sexually assaulting two choirboys in the 1990s, would be distressing. Despite his conviction being overturned in 2020, the cardinal’s reputation remained tarnished by the scandal.
