More than 80 per cent of Afghanistan is suffering from severe drought, paralysing food production and forcing people to leave their land. While the country is no stranger to droughts, the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (UNFAO) has warned that climate change could make them more frequent and intense. Already, Afghanistan’s wheat harvest in 2021 has fallen by about 20 per cent from the previous year. The UNFAO expects 23 million people will be unable to feed themselves daily by year’s end.
