Malaysia’s two-time former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said on July 3, 2023, that it is ‘unconstitutional’ to promote a multiracial Malaysia, as the federal constitution does not refer to Malaysia as a multiracial country. He also criticised the current government of Anwar Ibrahim for being beholden to the Democratic Action Party, part of Anwar’s ‘unity’ government, who Mahathir said had secular aims for the Islamic country.
