India’s fading jute fabric industry hopes for rebound as demand for plastic bag alternatives grows

Jute is becoming more popular worldwide as people look for more eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags and ways to fight climate change. Growing jute can help reduce greenhouse effects and producing fibres from the plants consumes less natural resources than cotton. Some analysts say the jute bag market could be worth more than US$3 billion by 2024, encouraging once thriving production centres such as India. While India’s jute production is still outpaced by neighbouring Bangladesh where cheaper labour is available, analysts say upgrading machinery and worker skills could revive the industry.
