The Women’s Tennis Association has suspended all of its tournaments in China. The decision, announced on December 1, 2021, follows international concern over Beijing’s censorship of an explosive sexual assault claim by Chinese tennis pro Peng Shuai. The two-time doubles grand slam winner accused a former high-ranking mainland official of pressuring her into having sex. The allegation, posted on the Chinese social media site Weibo in November, was deleted minutes after it appeared. Peng has not been seen in public since, apart from photos and videos circulated by state media.
