Top officials from China and the US met in Italy on March 14, 2022, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is now in its third week. With the US and its allies imposing sanctions to punish Russia for starting the war, Moscow has reportedly asked Beijing for military and financial assistance to help it take Ukraine. The war threatens to become a new source of tension dividing Washington and Beijing, and US national security adviser Jake Sullivan warned that China would face serious consequences if it backs Russia in the war. Chinese foreign policy adviser Yang Jiechi warned the US not to mischaracterise Beijing’s stance.
