The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen is adopting a two-pronged approach in its battle against the Omicron variant of Covid-19, placing a strong emphasis on citywide testing, but allowing a degree of personal freedom during its weeklong lockdown. Chinese health authorities said the new strategy aims to balance pandemic control with economic well-being. But as the country is facing the biggest surge of Covid-19 infections in two years, authorities still enforced strict measures to halt the spread of the virus in other parts of the country, especially the epicentre in Jilin province.
