Protests have been organised in several cities around the world in support of rare public displays of frustration and anger in Chinese cities where people took to the streets to call for an end to the country’s zero-Covid policy. The protests were triggered by a November 24, 2022, deadly fire in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Some have questioned whether Covid restrictions were to blame for the tragedy, a claim authorities have denied.
