Omicron spreads to 48 countries, party in Norway becomes superspreader event for coronavirus variant

The new coronavirus variant Omicron has now reached 48 countries as of December 5, 2021, less than 2 weeks after it was first reported in South Africa. A corporate Christmas party in Norway on November 26 has become the biggest outbreak outside South Africa. At least half of the 120 participants tested positive, even though all of them were fully vaccinated and had tested negative before the event. Preliminary studies suggest that Omicron is spreading twice as quickly as the Delta variant, while top US pandemic adviser Anthony Fauci said it may be less dangerous than Delta. Despite the prevalence of Omicron, there have been no reports of death from the variant so far. Still many countries have tightened travel restrictions to slow down the spread of the variant.
