North Korea released footage, on April 14, 2023, showing a test launch of its new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Hwasong-18, which it fired a day earlier. The launch triggered a scare in northern Japan, where Hokkaido residents were told to take cover. Developing a solid-fuel ICBM has long been a key goal for North Korea as it could help Pyongyang deploy its missiles faster in the event of a war.
